Day 11: 2010 Kimberley Karavan Test Trek 0

Tabulam – Alstonville

Wow! What a great place! After an early morning dip in the Clarence River it was back to camp for some breakfast then onto the quad bikes for a short tour around the property. It’s rugged country on the hillside coming in but the river frontage is nice big river flats that Bart has spent years painstakingly clearing away lantana. The main swimming hole is just fantastic and with the recent rain over summer it is full and flowing well. You could easily spend days in a place like this just swimming and eating and sleeping and swimming and eating and sleeping some more….

Warrumbungles NP – Tabulam

A big day of driving today. We left our peaceful campsite in Warrumbungles NP – I would recommend staying here for anyone interested in a bush camping experience in the Warrumbungles NP. It was ‘Camp Gunneemooroo’ – if you head north on the Coonamble-Toorawenah Road there is a turn off on the eastern side of the road.It is well signposted and it takes about 7km in from the turn off. This gets you into the South-Western corner of the NP (Check it out on the DECCW website. It was a rough drive in and out as the road in the NP section is poorly maintained.

We travelled north again on Coonamble-Toorawenah Road then headed east through Warrumbungles NP. The drive through is pretty spectacular with some amazing mountains and scenery. Would have like to spend more time exploring but we had to keep on moving because we had so far to go. I will return with my family when the children are old enough to enjoy a long bush walk and see the space observatories.

Warrumbungles

Spent a nice day today relaxing and enjoying the bush camping experience. We have a great spot down on the banks of a dry creek bed and we haven’t seen anyone else at all today! This morning we spent about 1.5hrs walking up the creek bed and back for a little exploring fun. We found a little water. Spent the afternoon lazing around, reading and sleeping. It was great to relax after such a busy week of traveling, photography, filming duties and handing over the Karavan. It was great to finish the day with a hot shower thanks to the Kamper’s on board hot water system. We all felt greatly refreshed!

Tomorrow we begin the journey home!

Day 8: 2010 Kimberley Karavan Test Trek 0

Cobar – Warrumbungles National Park

Today I’ve experienced two extremes of the camping trailer lifestyle. We started in a caravan park and have ended the day here, in a rugged bush camp in a National Park. John and Jenny, the new Karavan owners had a great nights sleep and are pretty pleased with the van in general. We spent the best part of the day helping them understand all the features and getting their electronic brake controller set up correctly.

After lunch we left John and Jenny with their new toy and headed off to here, Warumbungles National Park, just outside of Coonabarabran. After a brief stop in Warren, we went through Gilgandra on the way which was a very nice looking town.

We had ourselves a little adventure getting in here though. Turning off the main road we followed the signs for a bush camping area (Camp Gunneemooroo). Things started well enough with a gorgeous drive east heading towards the amazing mountains with the setting sun behind us. But the road started getting narrower and narrower and then it was blocked, twice with trees and once with a washed out creek crossing. I was prepared to turn around and head for an easier camping ground but Bart had other ideas. He wasn’t going to let some trees and ditches stop him and his Kamper.
